Let’s put this In Layman’s Terms, what is Constipation? Well! Simply put: When you go to the toilet but can’t have a bowel movement.
Western Society is known to have this problem in large numbers due to the diet consumed in this part of the world.
Antacids, antidepressants, cold medicines and pain relievers, as well as medications used to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cardiovascular conditions, are killing us slowly with prolonged use.
You would be surprised to know how many over the counter medication causes constipation: Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Naproxen, Allegra, Claritin,Zyrtec, Allegra Vicodin, Norco, Tylenol with codeine, Verapamil, Diltiazem,Aspirin,Gaviscon, Mylanta, Iron supplements such as ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate and ferrous gluconate, cough medicines containing codeine or hydrocodone, and this is just the tip of the iceberg there are over 150 different kinds of over the counter medications that causes constipation.
While working in the hospital, many patients were admitted with constipation. The doctors would usually prescribe a laxative, but for those who were severe and believe you me, there were many severe cases, they would have to have surgery to get the fecal matter out of their colon or we as nurses would have the fun job of disimpacting them due to the fact that the patient couldn’t eliminate the stool out of their bowels by themselves.
Being constipated can wreak havoc in your life. It can sometimes be a very painful experience, something one should not take likely. If the waste cannot be eliminated from the body, sometimes it will be eliminated in other ways. I have seen patients eliminate fecal matter from the mouth.
My own personal experience, with my grandson, he was about 2 years of age and he was constipated. He was very fussy because he was in a lot of discomfort and for those of you who have experienced constipation you can relate.
My grandson began breaking out in liver spots all over his face. His body weight increased and he was far heavier than usual for a child his size. Now, keep in mind he wasn’t fat over normally overweight, but during this episode of constipation he was heavy.
I told my daughter to take him to the hospital and she did. When she came home she hugged me and began to cry, when I asked her what had happened she said the doctor had to disimpact my grandchild and when he did the doctor had to leave the room because the smell was so bad.
Constipation is a huge problem in North American with our children. Parents, please become more aware as to what you are feeding your child because without evening knowing it you could be setting up your children to be very sick over time and this would be based solely on the food you are feeding them.
The average person will not take the time to research what they are putting into their mouths and digesting into their stomach. Taking over the counter medication is only a temporary fix that could lead to severe health problems if continued. Some will suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms which is a well-known side effect of some of the over the counter drugs previously mentioned.
Along with some of these symptoms bloating and nausea, cold like or flu symptoms, bad breath, coated tongue and body odor are sometimes common. You could try purchasing laxatives or stool softeners from your local drug store or you could go a more healthy, holistic way, which makes more sense to me.
Think about this for a second, it’s a never-ending cycle i.e, you feel pain or discomfort then you pop a pill, you then take a laxative or stool softener, you receive temporary relief, but the underlying health problem still exists. Wouldn’t it make more sense to heal the body whereas the pain or discomfort in permanently gone?
I know for some of you, you may think this is a difficult thing to do, but to be honest it is not as hard as you may think. One of the first things to include in your diet is water. Yes, you read correctly, Water! A lot of us are dehydrated and craving water and we don’t even know it because we are not listening to our bodies, instead, we choose to grab a soda pop, a fruit drink, etc. these beverages are loaded with sugar.
You may think this will quench your thirst and it probably feels like it does at that particular moment, but in reality, this is doing more harm to your body than good. Yeah! I get it, some of you may think the water is boring or too plain and you may feel for something sweet, but all that sugar that you are taking into your system, can eventually lead to health problems with enough consumption over time.
You can start by including more fiber into your diet, fresh fruits in the mornings at breakfast time is a healthier alternative appose to cereal, toast, bacon and eggs, etc. make sure the fruits have seeds in them, the fruits will clean your system and help to loosen up the waste in our body allowing easier elimination.
You can also eat darker green leafy vegetables, and no I am not talking about iceberg lettuce, I am talking about romaine lettuce, mustard greens, kale, spinach, etc. if you want to add a little zing to the taste try adding fresh lemon juice on top of your vegetables, you might be pleasantly surprised.Instead of white rice or potatoes on the side, maybe try pumpkin, quinoa, brown rice, wild rice, etc.
I know for some of you, you’re not going to give up the meat quite yet, so I would suggest, free-range chicken, organic meats, and fish if you really want it, but eat this sparingly. You can incorporate almond nuts, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, just to name a few. This is a great place to start on your road to a healthier lifestyle.
